Fiona reports on a fascinating Shackleton event in Ireland

Nov 1, 2016 | News

I’m recently back from the 16th Shackleton Autumn School held in Athy, County Kildare, Ireland, birthplace of the great Sir Ernest Shackleton.  The Shackleton Museum, where the event is held, is the only permanent museum dedicated to Shackleton in the world, and it’s well worth a visit.

We had some very interesting lectures on numerous polar-related topics as well as news of forthcoming books.  One which intrigued me particularly is When Your Life Depends on It, co-authored by Brad Borkan and David Hirzel, which is due out in January 2017.  It is an adventure book based on the harrowing life and death decisions made by early Antarctic explorers during the heroic era of exploration in the early 20th century which also offers lessons from their decisions to help us make better personal and business decisions in our lives today.  More about it at www.extreme-decisions.com

As many of my Arcturus clients know, I am a keen supporter of the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society (DCPS) who were at the event and presented the Centre with a photograph of the Shackleton Blue Plaque which was unveiled at the redeveloped Millbay Dock, Plymouth in September. I am already excited about the events that the DCPS is planning to mark Scott’s 150th birthday on 6 June 2018.

You can read more about the polar societies with which Arcturus is involved here.
