The Kapitan Khlebnikov, which carries a maximum of 112 passengers in comfort, is a modern icebreaker which has two helicopters for making landings in otherwise inaccessible places, as well as giving astounding aerial views. |
Embark in Ushuaia. Cross the Drake Passage and continue into the Weddell Sea to land by helicopter and explore the Emperor Penguin colony on the frozen sea near Snow Hill Island. Visit the Adélie and Gentoo Penguin colonies on the Antarctic Peninsula. Disembark in Ushuaia. Embark in Ushuaia. Cross the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula. Navigate the Neumayer and Lemaire Channels. Visit Ukrainian Vernadskiy Station, cross the Antarctic Circle and continue to Marguerite Bay and into the Bellinghausen Sea. Land on Peter I Island. Break through the ice on the Amundsen Sea before visiting the Dry Valleys by helicopter. Visit the huts of Scott and Shackleton at Cape Royds and Cape Evans. Embark in Lyttelton, New Zealand, and sail to Enderby and Campbell Islands. Continue into the Ross Sea. Visit Cap Adare, where Carsten Borchgrevink made the first overwintering on Antarctica. Landings are planned at Possession Islands, Cape Hallet, Campbell Glacier, Terra Nova Bay, Cape Russell, the Drygalski Ice Tongue, Franklin Island, Shackleton's hut at Cape Royds, Scott's hut at Cape Evans, and the Dry Valleys. Visit the American Station at McMurdo Sound, with Scott's Discovery hut nearby. On the way north, visit Balleny Island and Macquarie Island with its Royal Penguin colony. Disembark in Hobart, Tasmania. The guest lecturer for this voyage will be Adrian Raeside grandson and biographer of Sir Charles Wright - glaciologist for Scott's 1910 expedition.
