ARCTIC 2008 : Spitsbergen | Greenland & Canada | North Atlantic | Russia | Icebreaker Voyages |
ICEBREAKER CRUISES 2008 The following notes are brief descriptions of cruises to rarely visited parts of the world which are famous for their historic and cultural interest and for their natural history. They are only practicable through the use of a Russian icebreaker that has been modified for passenger use. Frequent landings are made by Zodiac inflatable boats, and the ship's helicopters allow landings which are impossible by boat. For single passengers there is a cabin-share programme available. Please enquire for a detailed coloured brochure Arctic Quest - Ellesmere Island, Baffin Island and Greenland |
This voyage will take place in an area well known to Arcturus in which our staff has worked since 1980. The eastern coast of Ellesmere Island and the Kane Basin are still rarely visited despite its considerable interest and this voyage offers the opportunity to visit historic sites ranging from the heroic age of polar exploration to the small-tool culture of 4500 years ago. Landing sites will include Qaanaaq, Fort Conger, Pim Island, Skraeling Island and Pond Inlet. Wildlife encounters should include snow geese, snowy owls, gyrfalcons, narwal, caribou and walrus.
