ARCTIC 2010 : Spitsbergen | Greenland | North Atlantic | Russian Far East | Icebreaker Voyages |
ICEBREAKER CRUISES 2010 The following notes are brief descriptions of cruises to rarely visited parts of the world which are famous for their historic and cultural interest and for their natural history. They are only practicable through the use of a Russian icebreaker that has been modified for passenger use. Frequent landings are made by Zodiac inflatable boats, and the ship's helicopters allow landings which are impossible by boat. For single passengers there is a cabin-share programme available. Northwest Passage: west to east Tanquary Fjord - western Ellesmere Island |
This icebreaker expedition sails north from Resolute to the high latitudes of the western shore of Ellesmere Island. Landings are intended on Ellesmere Island, Devon Island and in Tanquary Fjord with aerial-sightseeing planned over Axel Heiberg Island and the Belcher Channel. This voyage will take you to some of the most remote communities in the world. Polar bears, musk oxen, Arctic hares, seals, whales and walruses inhabit this icy paradise. It is also an area rich in the history of Arctic exploration. The final landing is on Beechey Island to view the Franklin Memorial. You can feel history surround you on this desolate coast where Franklin and his men wintered in 1846-7 before disappearing. A BBC film crew aboard this voyage, which will be Kapitan Khlebnikov's final journey to Tanquary Fjord before retirement. From Murmansk we cross the Barents Sea towards the relatively unexplored archipelago of Franz Josef Land, which was only discovered in the late 1800s. Shore landings are planned here and at 90°N, the top of the world. On Franz Josef Land's stunning flat-topped islands you will encounter fascinating Arctic wildlife in its spectacular setting of snow and ice. Polar bears, walrus, arctic fox, seals and belugas all inhabit the region. Stand on the North Pole and enjoy a hike on the expansive ice before continuing to Franz Josef Land, keeping a watchful eye for polar bears en route. Sightseeing by helicopter gives you an aerial view of the ship crushing its way through the formidable Arctic Ocean pack ice and is an unforgettable sight on this most memorable of journeys.
